I'm taking CMI 3377: Designing for Play because I'm working towards getting the Game Design and Culture Certificate that Texas Tech offers. I'm an Art Major and I'm interested in the ways that an audience can interact with a piece of art, similar to the ways that a player experiences a video game. I'm getting the certificate to learn more about how that experience works and everything that goes into making it impact the player.

I hope that this class will teach me more about how to create and balance game mechanics. When it comes to games, I've always been more interested in the visuals and narrative rather than the game play and rules, so I hope this class will allow me to branch out and grow in those areas.  I mainly have experience with video games so it will be cool to see the differences in creating a digital game vs an analog one and what limitations come for it. I'm excited to design and create the physical prototypes of games. Hopefully my background in art will help me there.

I play video games and I prefer RPGs (especially turn-based) and horror games, but I've been trying out some roguelikes recently. Even though it is none of those, Ace Attorney is one of my favorite series. Some of the first video games I played were pixel horror games such as Ib, The Witch's House, and The Crooked Man because they were free and simple to play. Some more recent video games I've really enjoyed are Hades, Omori, and Persona 5 Royal. I love playing solitaire and chess, even though I'm not that good at either. Uno is my favorite card game (besides solitaire) and Clue is my favorite board game. Tabletop RPGs interest me, but I've never played them myself.
